Filipino Boxing
Boxing has been a well-supported sport in the small cluster of islands in Asia called the Philippines. Many youngsters in the country aspire to become the next big thing in the boxing world, and start their training early, usually around the ages of sixteen to eighteen. Boxing is a sport that Pinoys really love, which is why many Filipinos have excelled in the sport enough to make a name for themselves and their country in the world professional boxing circuits.
Pinoy boxers are regarded as some of the best in the world, and many Filipinos have brought fame and honor not only to their country, but in the whole of Asia as well. “Pancho Villa” Guilledo for one, is the first Asian to win a world championship while Gabriel “Flash” Elorde was the very first boxer from Asia to be inducted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame, which is based in New York.
Nowadays, the Philippines is still represented by many professional Pinoy boxers. Among all the active Pinoy boxers these days, Manny Pacquiao is the most well-known. Touted by Ring Magazine as the best boxer pound for pound in 2008, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao has held four titles in four different divisions, and is the first and only Pinoy to do so.
